This painting illustrates a story that my favorite professor told me. Once upon a time, there was a little girl on a beach covered in starfish. One by one, she picked up each starfish and threw it into the ocean. An old man walked by and asked her what she was doing. She said, “the tide’s going out and the sun is coming up. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die!” He laughed and replied, “there are millions of starfish- what you’re doing means nothing!” Without hesitating, she picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean. “It meant something to that one,” she said.
